Communities and NGOs reaffirm protest against Timber CertificationBy Collective of Indigenous Communities and NGOs on Forest Issues 2001-10-01 | In our joint NGO Statement on 30 July 2001, we gave notice to the NTCC, as it was then called, that we were withdrawing our participation in the NTCC/MCandI process. We further stated that we were withholding our endorsement of the MCandI as currently proposed by the NTCC. TO: Y.BHG. DATO DR. FREEZAILAH BIN CHE YEOM CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) 19F, Level 19, Menara PGRM No. 8 Jalan Pudu Ulu, Cheras 56100 Kuala Lumpur NGOs STATEMENT TO MTCC, SEPTEMBER 2001In our joint NGO Statement on 30 July 2001, we gave notice to the NTCC, as it was then called, that we were withdrawing our participation in the NTCC/MCandI process. We further stated that we were withholding our endorsement of the MCandI as currently proposed by the NTCC. Since then, we have had various communications and even a specific meeting among ourselves, to consider the appeal from the National Steering Committee Chairman, Dato Dr. Freezailah Che Yeom, to reconsider our withdrawal from the process. We wish to state that we agreed to participate in the process, as we were hopeful that our concerns and the aspirations of the indigenous peoples would be adequately addressed. However, with time, we became more and more disillusioned with the MTCC and the reasons for initiating the MCandI. In fact, it became evident that our continued support for the MTCC/MCandI process would have compromised our position, and jeopardise the livelihoods of indigenous communities involved. The fundamental difference between the objectives of the MTCC and that of ours is that the MTCC is structured to find ways to sell our timber while we are mandated to protect our forests and to secure the livelihoods and interests of indigenous peoples and local communities who live in, depend on and derive their spiritual and cultural identity from the forests. As such, after reconsidering the matter in depth, and taking into consideration the interests of the indigenous and local communities, we have decided to stand by our original decision to withdraw both our involvement in, and our endorsement of, the MTCC/MCandI process. Furthermore, with our withdrawal from the MTCC/MCandI process, we wish to state that we have NOT delegated our mandate to any remaining NGO member of the National Steering Committee (NSC). We also call for a moratorium on further logging in primary forest areas and in areas where indigenous peoples are asserting their native rights to land.
