UB Penan arrested for alleged tractors burning

2001-10-10 | A Penan from Long Sabai, Ulu Tutoh River in Miri Division was arrested by the police and escorted from the Shin Yang timber camp near Long Sabai to the Marudi Police Station on 8th October 2001. Hendry David, 20, was not handcuffed from the timber camp to the Long Temala express boat wharf but the police handcuffed him while inside the express boat till Marudi.

Hendry David, 20, was not handcuffed from the timber camp to the Long Temala express boat wharf but the police handcuffed him while inside the express boat till Marudi.

The information was conveyed by Romeo Pusa ( Long Sabai), TK Pusa Luding (Long Sabai), and TK Lajan Kade (Long Lai).

Hendry is being accused of setting fire to two logging tractors belonging to the logging company Shin Yang between 25 and 29 September 2001.

Hendry and the community people protest strongly to the arrest as the people were not at the camp during the period.

Police had only allowed the two headmen (TK) to meet with Hendry on 9th October 2001.

The support group had contacted a lawyer in Kuching and provided all information todate to take up the case.

The Police had informed Romeo, TK Pusa and TK Lajan Kade that Hendry was being detained for the maximum 14 days for investigation.
