 Penan appeal to Minister against MTCC certificationBy communities communities 2005-05-12 | Unhappy with the reply from the MTCC after protesting against the certification of Samling logging operation on lands claimed by the Penan, the people are appealing directly to the responsible Federal Minister to step in. (Fax: 03 8880 3482) 15 April 2005,Y.B. Datuk Menteri, Ref: Protest against the approval of MTCC Certification to Samling Plywood (Baramas) Sdn.Bhd. On 25 January 2005 we, the Penan people and headmen of the Upper Ulu Baram area, wrote to MTCC regarding the above matter (please find a copy of this letter attached). MTCC has since acknowledged receipt of our complaint and has said that it will take the complaint into account when carrying out its next visit to the Sela'an Linua Concessionary. We find that MTCC's response is inadequate and does not take our concerns seriously. We hereby lodge a formal appeal against the decision to grant the MTCC Certification to Samling. We request that the certificate be suspended pending the resolution of this appeal.
