2007-04-21 | PRESS STATEMENT: KUCHING (21 April 2007) "The People's Justice Party (Keadilan) is not intimidated by the Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Pehin Taib Mahmud's threat for a defamation suit to be commenced against the Party", the State Liaison Committee Chairman Haji Wan Zainal Wan Sanusi and Legal Advisor See Chee How said today in a press statement issued in a press conference in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

It was revealed at the press conference at 3 p.m. local time that the Sarawak Chief Minister had, through his lawyers Reddi and Co Advocates, issued a letter of demand dated 20th April 2007 to Party Keadilan Rakyat Sarawak, Haji Wan Zainal Wan Sanusi and See Chee How demanded, amongst others, a public retraction and apology within 48 hours for the leaflets distributed in the state concerning accusations of corruption allegedly linked to the Chief Minister and his family

Keadilan Sarawak, after its monthly state liaison committee meeting today, declared that the Party and its leaders are ready to fight the legal suit.

"Let the truth be unveil in our courts!" said the statement.

In the letter of demand, the Sarawak Chief Minister alleged that certain leaflets printed and published by Keadilan Sarawak and distributed by its leaders and members were highly defamatory and the words or characters mean and understood to mean that, among others:

(a) the CM is a corrupt person;

(b) the CM is a corrupt politician;

(c) the CM has amassed illegal monies of RM32 million from timber trade;

(d) the CM is involved in illegal activities that he should be investigated by the Anti Corruption Agency;

(e) the CM is unfits to be the Chief Minister of Sarawak;

(f) the CM is not qualified to hold any political officer including as the President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu.

The leaflets, in 3 languages (National language, Chinese and English), were taken from the reports of Japan Times and Malaysiakini, the Internet news portal.

"The scandal involving RM32 million in kickbacks paid by Japanese shipping companies for timber from Sarawak as alleged by the Japanese media had put all Sarawakians to shame. said Keadilan.

"We in Party Keadilan Sarawak merely demanded the truth and if the Chief Minister chooses, let it be revealed by the Courts. We are ready for the action which has already been dubbed as the mother of all court battles."

Keadilan Sarawak State Liaison Committee Chairman Haji Wan Zainal Wan Sanusi said that the Party will not back down from any fight against corruption, nepotism and abuse of power by the authorities.

"The scandal involving RM32 million in kickbacks paid by Japanese shipping companies for timber from Sarawak, as revealed by the Japanese tax authority, has since been published by the Asahi/Herald Tribune and Kyoto Times in Japan.

"We would suggest that the Chief Minister commences defamation suits in Japan to clear his name and most importantly, the name of all Sarawakians." concluded the press statement.
